Working with an independent professional counsellor

Reproductive Counselling

It’s amazing to think that with advancements in medicine, we now have so many ways that can help couples and individuals have a child. Reproductive counselling can help you whilst you go through this process.

If you are in the process of exploring the possibility of seeking help to conceive a child, or a bit further down the line with the process, it is very useful to consult an independent professional and experienced counsellor who is not connected to any specific clinic. The counsellor that Nightingale will recommend to you will be impartial and help you to explore the choices available to you. They will also offer additional support around the challenges and emotions in trying to conceive a child. This is very specialised work and needs the guiding hand of a counsellor who understands the process that you could potentially be going through. Our counsellor has been a qualified couple and psychosexual counsellor for fifteen years. They also have the added specialism of reproductive counselling.

Fertility options that are currently available to you

  • Fertility drugs
  • IVF In vitro fertilisation
  • IUI Intrauterine Insemination
  • ICSI Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.
  • Donor sperm/egg
  • Embryo adoption
  • Surrogacy

This is an example of useful information on egg donation:

When an embryo is formed it has several copies of many genes.  The environmental impact of the womb is the key thing determining which of these genes are activated.  So, the embryo has none of the genetic material of the mum carrying a donor egg, but she plays a key role in the activation of certain genes over others. This type of information is invaluable to a couple considering donor sperm or eggs.

The main areas couple are working on with our counsellor is: –

  • Coming to terms with an Infertility
  • Choices available
  • Testing what to expect
  • The effects of treatment
  • Dealing with the extended family
  • Developing a healthy lifestyle habit
  • Loss and disappointment
  • Keeping your relationship on track
