Sex Addiction

The term “sex addiction” is used to describe any sexual activity that feels ‘out of control’. Being sexually addicted is the feeling that you are engaging in a sexual activity that you are no longer in charge of. Sexual addiction is not defined by the activity itself, however, it is defined by the frequency of the activity.

Sex addiction has risen sharply over the last decade, with recent research suggesting that this is largely due to the large number of explicit pornographic sites which are easily accessible on the internet.

The psychosexual therapists

Nightingale psychosexual counsellors are highly qualified and experienced sex therapists working with many sexual problems and sexual issues. The therapists will have trained for at least two years with Relate or Relationship Scotland. Our psychosexual therapists will immediately put you at your ease and they will never judge you or your behaviour. The motivation of the sex therapist is to help you overcome sexual issues affecting your life and relationships.

Working with sexual issues and problems including sex addiction is very specialised work and should only be undertaken by experienced psychosexual counsellors, who are qualified to Diploma Level and beyond.

Sex addiction is also associated with other sexual issues around

  • Paying for sex
  • Visiting massage parlours
  • Participating in sexual activities with strangers on-line
  • Meeting strangers for sex
  • Lack of confidence in sexual ability

When you have developed a sex addiction you may feel very isolated and consistently anxious about being found out and your most intimate secrets exposed. You may also feel shame and guilt as your behaviours become more and more out of control.

Thankfully help is at hand for you to recover. We are only a phone call away.

If you partner finds out

If you are in a relationship, exposure can be devastating for you and your partner. Your partner may feel betrayed and shocked and blame themselves for not being good enough for you, which seriously affects their self-esteem. In turn you will generally feel guilty about causing them pain. If your partner finds out we would ask you to come together as a couple for a few sessions to explore your sexual relationship as a couple.

About this service…

Our therapist, Jenna, has specialised training in working with sexual compulsivity, better known as sex addiction. This is very specialised work, the good news is, unlike other addictions, you can make a recovery and move back from the activity if you want to.

The cost of a session is £85 and lasts just under an hour. We ask that you pay in advance of your session.

The number of sessions will be discussed on your first session with Jenna and a bespoke plan of action will be designed specifically for you.

This service is exclusively online, so it’s available to people throughout the UK.

We would be delighted to provide you with Jenna’s therapist profile so you can learn more about her.

How does it affect your life?

The simple truth is that sex addiction is not defined by how much sex or even the type of sex a person has, just as alcoholism is not defined by how much you drink or what kind of alcohol you consume. The defining factor – for all addictions – is how the activity affects your life.
