Intergenerational Mediation

Intergenerational Mediation

Intergenerational mediation supports constructive communication between all relationships in conflict.

Intergenerational Mediation

Intergenerational Mediation looks at overcoming family arguments and disagreements. This form of mediation works between the various generations of your family.

Family relationships can be challenging at times. The relationships you have with your children, your parents, your in-laws, and your grandparents, are all different.

We often base our sense of identity and self-worth on the strength of the relationships that we have with those closest to us. We are always quick to blame, however, with every relationship dynamic we all need to take responsibility for the part we played in the state of the relationship.

Relationships are a crucial part of our everyday life. Parents, children, in-laws, stepchildren, work colleagues and friends all form part of our relationship network. When these relationships fail, it affects us deeply and creates feelings of anger, frustration, and sadness which causes a shift in the way we relate to ourselves and others around us.

Overcome family arguments and disagreements

The goal of intergenerational mediation is to help family members improve communication, resolve conflict, have a better empathic understanding of each other and their issues and help create healthier relationships. Often family history needs to be discussed and the truth needs to be shared. Resentment from the past can be the cornerstone of the breakdown in family relationships.

We understand the importance of allowing each party to address individual issues, allowing for deeper communication and more efficient conflict management.

Some of the relationships that benefit from counselling are:

  • Father and son/daughter
  • Other significant family member
  • Parents and step parents
  • Step children
  • Grandparent
  • Siblings
  • Work colleagues
  • Friends

What our Mediators aim to do

The aim of the mediator is to ensure.

  • Both sides have an equal opportunity to have a session on their own
  • Both start to see the conflict situation more objectively
  • Ensure joint sessions allows equal space to talk and be heard
  • Improve communication between the parties
  • Clear past resentment
  • Move forward collaboratively without conflict
  • Agreed boundaries

Nightingale Mediators will not take sides but will ensure both parties have an equal share of time to express their feelings from their perspective. The mediator will also ensure we respect and acknowledge the other’s point of view and show an empathic understanding of the differences. With our help, you can improve your relationships, make conscious choices to change how you relate to others and learn new skills in effective communication and compromise.

I turned to Florence because I was so frustrated, angry and at the end of my rope all the time, basically overwhelmed on so many levels. Regularly meeting with Florence over a decent length of time enabled me to unravel and explore my past and everything else and draw conclusions to help me change patterns and behaviours that were bringing me such heartache and frustrations. I know my children and partner have benefited hugely from the journey I took with her guidance. Breaking a cycle and changing habits are so very difficult, but every visit I had with Florence made the impossible seem do-able. I would bounce out the door feeling such a weight had been lifted.
