Couple and Relationship Counselling

Be rest assured there is no failure in coming to work on your relationship with a couple counsellor. You have not failed, in fact, you are showing the greatest commitment you can to your relationship and a deep desire to learn how to make it better.

That’s where we come in.

All relationships can be challenging at times. That is a statement of fact. None of us are perfect, we are all flawed and will definitely be responsible for some of the issues within our couple relationship. Whether you are married, getting married, a same-sex couple, living together or in a couple relationship, deciding to engage in couple counselling is a positive step towards achieving a good relationship of health and balance.

Couple Counselling is designed to:

  • Open the lines of communication
  • Develop listening skills and empathic understanding of your partners point of view
  • Keep the environment safe for you to say what needs to be said
  • Encourage anger and resentment to be expressed more productively
  • Ensure each person is heard with no interrupting
  • Help you to look at your negative patterns of behaviours and how they impact your partner
  • Get and understanding of what a good couple relationship looks like to you.
  • Look at the significant couple relationships around you as a child
  • Examine how past relationships with parents and peers can affect your couple relationship in the present
  • Promote a deeper level of understanding of self-awareness and your awareness of your partner
  • How to change the way you communicate with each other
  • Learn strategies which you can draw on to stay on track.

All couple relationships can be challenging at times…

Couples counselling goes beyond having an unbiased shoulder to cry on. It’s about finding those light bulb moments that allow you to turn blame, rage, anger, sadness and tears into reconnection, relief, laughter, acceptance and love.

An experienced couple counsellor will provide you and your partner with valuable insight; both for you as individuals and as a couple. They’ll see the people behind the pain and will help you make sense of your past experiences and will help you define and work towards your goals for the future.

During your first couple counselling session with your counsellor:

  • Assess the nature of the challenges and issues you are presenting and take an overall view of your relationship and the challenges you are dealing with.
  • Examine what you want to achieve by seeking the services of a couple counsellor and the reasons why you individually feel your relationship is not working.
  • Encourage you to ask any questions or raise any concerns you may have before committing to a couple counselling process.
  • Allow you to get a feel for what couple counselling involves and how you will benefit
  • Design a support plan for you which may include, reading, worksheets and work to do at home between sessions.
  • Discuss the practicalities of couple counselling by looking at times, number and the length of each individual session required.

We offer appointments daytime, evening and weekends. Each session lasts 50mins. Florence will often ask for 90min sessions depending on the individual case which may require more time between sessions.
